Students and professionals are feeling increasingly overwhelmed, tired and anxious. They are struggling more with their responsibilities and as a result with their health.Over the past several years I asked my students about their stress levels. Much of what I see confirms what my other colleagues and organizations report and write about.
Are you feeling more tired than before?
Is your plate fuller than it used to be even a couple of years ago? Are there more things competing for your attention? Can you relate to this?
Several years ago I had a student who emailed me right before the winter break to ask about a specific “supplement” he could use to become smarter, to have better memory, to make studying easier.Since that time I was approached a number of times with similar questions. Unfortunately, he didn’t wait for my response.He went ahead to buy a product on the Internet, and started using the powder sent to him in the morning shakes.Later he learned that the product he bought was a banned drug from the European Union. After taking it for over a week, the student was unable to sleep for the following 10 days straight.He ended up in a hospital and paid a high price for his decision to try this “supplement” – seriously endangering his health and preventing him from finishing the semester.
This story taught me two lessons
First, I realized the lengths people will go to in order to improve their focus and concentration. It underscored the importance of focus, memory and clear thinking to students and young professionals.Finding the solution to this problem is closely followed by the desire to feel less tired and overwhelmed.The second lesson was the sheer amount of misinformation or dangerous recommendations available out there. It’s unbelievable just how tempting these could be to someone searching for a real solution.
Learning from trustworthy resources and getting good, reputable information is now more important than ever.
